New week, new opportunities, new quote! You know the routine. Life update: I have been trying my best to live in the moment and focus on being present. I’ll be the first to admit that it’s hard. Our minds are constantly running and thinking about the next task we have to accomplish. So, naturally that leads us to this post. The quote for this week is:
“Do more things that make you forget to check your phone.”
In other words…
How often do we pause and consider where we are investing our time? How many hours a day are we looking at our phones? What are we missing when we aren’t really living in the moment? I’m not trying to sound old-school, but when you really think about it, it’s true. We spend so much time on our phones and other devices, that sometimes we miss out on other things.
Don’t get me wrong. I love technology. I think it’s amazing and I like to geek out about it. And to be quite honest, I’m constantly using technology. I work full-time as a graphic designer (which means I’m literally on the computer for 9 hours a day) and then when I get home from work I am here, working on my blog, on my laptop. I’m also on my phone at work because I run social media accounts for our clients, and then later in the day and night I’m communicating with friends and family.
However! You know those moments when you get a few minutes to yourself so you just check your phone? That’s what I’m referring to. Do something else in that very moment. Let’s put our phones aside and go play with our dogs, go outside, read books, or speak with someone we love. So I’m not saying to eliminate technology from your everyday life – that would be unrealistic. I’m saying let’s live in the moment. Use technology as a tool rather than a distraction.
Let’s challenge ourselves to pause and consider where we are investing our time. What could we be doing more of when we spend less time on our phones? I was watching a vlog on YouTube earlier today and a group of friends went out to dinner and they stacked their phones in the middle of the table. This is a perfect example of this quote. Forget about social media and enjoy the company you have. Your phone will be there once you’re finished.
